What Is the Difference Between PTV and R Ratings?

PTV and R ratings are two different ways of describing aspects of slip resistance, but they are not interchangeable labels. Each is associated with a different test approach, so a result from one method should not automatically be converted into the other.

What is PTV?

PTV means Pendulum Test Value. It is obtained using a pendulum slip-resistance test, in which a test slider interacts with the floor surface under specified conditions. Results depend on the method, slider, surface condition and test procedure. Wet and dry conditions may produce different readings.

What are R ratings?

R ratings are commonly associated with ramp testing of flooring materials under specified conditions. They classify performance using a different apparatus and procedure from the pendulum test. The relevant standard and test conditions should be stated when an R rating is reported.

Can the results be compared directly?

Not reliably. Because the methods differ, an R rating should not be treated as a direct equivalent of a PTV number. When reviewing a floor specification, confirm which test method was used, what conditions were tested and which requirements apply to the site.

Which method should you use?

The appropriate method depends on the purpose of the assessment, the floor type, the applicable standard and the site conditions. For an existing installed floor, a competent assessor can recommend a suitable method and explain the limitations of the result.

GripBooster provides information on pendulum slip-resistance testing and floor assessment in Dubai and the UAE. Always interpret test results within the context of the specified method and applicable requirements.
